The Ranch Santiago brood mare band continues to develop over the past 15 years. Quality is constantly upgraded. We cull and replace individual mares to breed for specific goals. Our overall goal is to produce exceptional quality riding mules that can perform on the ranch, trail, parade, and show ring. We desire mule colts with good calm minds, who are people oriented, with refined horse type heads, muscular bodies, strong medium bone, and color - chrome - lightening, hard feet, 14 to 16 hands tall. QUALITY!!!!!
The blood of many of our appaloosa mares goes back to the Nez Perz Indian tribe's horses that roamed the hills of the north west before Lewis and Clark made their exploration.
The spotted appaloosa mule at birth is a genetically elusive blessing. A few of the mule colts are born spotted but Appaloosa's most develop their color between 2 and 5 years of age. The color usually changes each year after the winter coat is shed with a more consistent color being set at around 5 years of age. This is true with appaloosa mules and horses. A few of our mules are red roan, bay, or sorrel, but the majority are showing good color with age. The strongly stripped hoofs at birth are a good indicator of color to come with age.
