Red Line Wilbur is the tried and true "bomb proof" palomino mule on the left.
This picture was taken at the National Cowboy Symposium, a 30,000 person event held annually in Lubbock, Texas. Wilbur is being ridden by Dr. Jim's sister in law Robin. She is a novice rider. Wilbur had not been ridden in 4 months. We loaded Red Line Wilbur up and took him from the ranch to a loud parade at this huge event. Wilbur had fun ... Robin had fun ... and Rancho Santiago again won 1st place in the divisions we entered in this great event.
Of course, Wilbur never made a misstep and kept his wonderful safe calm on.

RED LINE WILBUR
“Bomb Proof as an equine can be”
Wilbur is for all of you good folks that have asked for
an older ultra safe mule to ride ... or for a riding therapy mule for folks with special needs
.... here is Wilbur.
When we received Red Line Wilbur from friends after the lengthy illness and death of a family member. Red Line Wilbur was thin when he arrived at Rancho Santiago because of being on poor pasture during the summer. It is now harsh winter time.
THIS BEAUTY HAS EARNED HIS 3 BELLS IN THE TAIL (rides - drives - packs) DUE TO HIS ATHLETIC VERSITILITY AND INTELLIGENCE BECAUSE RED LINE WILBUR RIDES, DRIVES IN A TEAM, DRIVES PULLING A CART, PACKS, COON JUMPS PULLS LOGS & IS A GARDEN OR ORCHARD PLOWING JOHN MULE.
Wilbur moves slow and extra safely over obstacles in the trail ... he will not hurt himself or you.
“Red Line” Wilbur 17+ years old and15 hands tall Red Line Wilbur is a 17 + year old “aged” john mule that stands 15 hands tall. This mule guy is not too big and hard to mount but he is big enough to carry a large sized adult. He is built for driving, trail riding & pleasure riding with nice withers that hold a saddle or harness in place. He has strong and thick muscling for driving and garden plowing.
Wilbur is an intelligent mule with an easy going personality coupled with great athletic ability that is suited for beginners with some riding experience or for those of us who must have a gentle dependable mount. Wilbur performs good for a driver with experience.
Wilbur handles water and he is a coon jumper mule. Lead him up to the obstacle and say “Get Over” and he easily jumps across the obstacle or low fence. This sure beats riding up and down fence lines for miles looking for a gate.
No hoof issues ... Sit on a bucket to trim and shoe. Stands quietly for mane roaching even between his ears. Easy to bridle and mane roach.
NO EAR PROBLEMS. Wilbur stands still in place for saddling and harnessing. Note ... lead rope on the ground. Redline Wilbur does all of the basics plus right all of the time. No problems with his feet, ears, or dogs and NO RUN AWAY. Wilbur can follow another mule while riding with the group or goes away from the group. We drive and ride Wilbur with a snaffle bit and he also rides with a hackamore.
He rides with western tack, a “V” style mule breast collar, and a britching. Driving is a blast. Driving is more dangerous than riding.Wilbur is the tried and true mule guy to safely give youall the experience you need to develop your driving skills.
Dr. Jim says “Wilbur has the most smooth and best ground covering trot with the cart that I have experienced in 63 years, but most importantly Wilbur has good stop and stands in place. He prances while pulling a cart!” As well as he pulls a cart then he will also pull a sleigh through the snow ... Talk About Fun! Wilbur has a wonderful smooth response to the verbal driving commands of gee (come right), haw (come left), step easy, come back, and whoa. Just the lightest twitch of the hand on the driving line in the direction the driver wants to turn is indeed power steering. Folks this type of top versatile safe mule is once in a very special blue moon ever for sale! If you want to learn to ride and drive safely then Red Line Wilbur should be in your corral. Note: Wilbur has not been driven in 2 years ... he will be no problem
RED LINE WILBUR is for sale at the ranch at $5,770.00 without transportation. $5,770.00 is a lot of MONEY? Yes & NO because you get what you pay for with this mule!Just how much are safety, health, peace, warm memories and laughter worth? A price can’t really be put on those needs. Good folks, this mule might seem somewhat expensive, but in truth “Wilbur” is a bargain. Life is short. Expense is quite relative. Happy trails are deserved. Drive, Pack and Ride the best.
As so called “bomb proof” as an equine gets.
